Boro Stitching

I learned about the old Japanese technique while attending a Boro stitching workshop. Boro comes from Japanese boroboro, meaning something tattered or repaired. This technique has existed since the 16th century, when scarcity of textile materials created the need for inventive methods to make warm clothing/quilts. This method utilizes layers of tattered pieces stitched and woven together to repair and create new garments. Aesthetically, it creates beautiful textures and with this piece I play with textures and colors from old kimonos and naturally dyed denim.
