Corn, Cotton, Cactus

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines inversion as: reversal of position, order, form, or relationship: such as breaking off of a chromosome section and its subsequent reattachment in inverted position. This gave me the Idea of inverting the colors in Corn, Cotton, Cactus. Giving it an ironic twist as the colors of each painting were changed to their opposite. The crops I chose show the progression of genetic modification in agriculture on a timeline. It also highlights the importance of these crops in our society.

The purpose of this project was to identify the role genetic modification and genetic engineering plays in our food. I was inspired by The Cactus Project: C-lab which used Genetic engineering to produce a cactus with human hair. I decided to delve into research and figure out what genetic modification and genetic engineering actually meant. Were they the same or different? I wanted to discover if GMO’s and GE technologies are as risky as they are construed in the media.
